Some Party ideas......
Raid the saddle shop for horsey prizes like
leadropes, tins of saddle soap, grooming brushes, horse books, flyveils and
haynets. They also have lots of novelty items like t-shirts and keyrings.
Get some face paint and paint all your guests'
faces their favourite horse colour...you can add a star or blaze.
Decorate your house or backyard to look like a
stable. Bales of straw make great seats and you can build some small showjumps
to play follow the leader...of course the Birthday Girl gets to lead everyone
as 'Alpha Mare'!
Ask your guests to come in any horsey gear they
have...jodhpurs, riding boots, hats etc.
Buy mini buckets from a craft shop to use as unique
take-home treat bags (include some sugar cubes for your guests' horses if they
have one!)
Make an Appaloosa ice-cream cone by using chocolate
sprinkles or Malteasers. Choc-chip cookies can be 'Appaloosa Cookies'. Make Palomino sundaes with caramel ice-cream and whipped cream. Or for a really fun time, make edible showjumps...Horsewyse did a story on these once and the response was amazing! Not only they yummy to make, you get to eat them afterwards! The pic on the bottom is a waterjump made from blue jelly. Other stuff we used were lamingtons, cakes, marshmallows, wafers...it's endless.
Hold a model horse show with ribbons for prizes,
or make mini rosettes.
As guests arrive, pin a piece of paper containing
the name of a famous horse on their backs. They have to find out their horse's
name by asking questions that can only be answered with a 'yes' or 'no'. Eg.
"Is my horse real or pretend?" Some horse names you can use are Spirit,
Makybe Diva, Black Beauty, Mr Ed, Phar Lap, Shadowfax, Saddle Club horses (Prancer,
Starlight & Belle), Flicka.
Have guests pretend they are horses and prance
around to music. Turn off the music and everyone must freeze in their current
position. If they move they are out. Continue until there's a final winner.
Make a showjumping course out of brooms, mops and
buckets and jump off against the clock. Fastest around the course wins.
Ask gueses to bring their favourite stuffed horse
toy. Put all the toys in a pile, blindfold everyone one by one and see if they
can pick out their toy without looking.
Make a horsey headpiece for each guest using Alicebands
with felt horse ears and a wool forelock. You can also make wool tails to tie
around their waists.
For a 3D variation of 'Pin the Tail on the Donkey',
draw a horse, make a mini horse tail using wool with blue-tack on the top; blindfold
guests and see who can attach the tail closest to the horse's rump.
Cut out horse shapes in different colours and give
them points:
2 x gold = 20 points
4 x silver = 5 points
8 x red = 5 points
16 x blue = 2 points
Hide them inside or outside (depending on the weather). After all the horse
have been found, the guest who gets the most points wins a prize.
Have a horse DVD playing on TV so guests can have
a rest and watch a horsey movie whenever they want. Racing Stripes was
recently voted the most popular movie in a Horsewyse survey, followed by Spirit,
Stallion of the Cimmaron, Black Beauty and Seabiscuit.
If you have any old saddles, play "Musical
Saddles' instead of Musical Chairs. (They need to be old though as they'll probably
get trodden on!) Or you can cut out saddle shapes from cardboard.
• Instead of handing out lolly bags when your guests leave, why not give them copies of Ponywyse (a few people have done this and it's a great idea!) We offer a discount for bulk orders.
